Note: Technology & Enterprise

All Year One teachers urgently need the following for our  technology project.




-empty egg boxes
-cardboard tubing
- pieces of cardboard
- ribbon or thick string 
- masking tape

Week 9: What We Are Learning This Week



Literacy: This week students are using the digraphs ai and ee to read/write words and construct sentences. During guided reading sessions this week I will be exposing students to the reading strategy 'Sound Talk It' to encourage them to sound out each sound in a word when it is unfamiliar and they are having trouble reading. In writing lessons this week students will continue to innovate and create their own story based on our class narrative "Cat, Prickle and Pelican." Handwriting sessions this week will focus on  the robot letters r, n, m and  h.  

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is number stories using addition (Miss Blakie had 9 teddies but she found 5 more, how many teddies are there all together?) Activities will also include students practising their understanding of doubles to 5 (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5). Number writing to 100 will also be revised and iPads used to incorporate revision of other mathematical concepts.

Science: Last week students made models of dinosaurs to represent what they have learnt about the physical features of dinosaurs. Photographs were taken and their work is displayed in our classroom. This week Science lessons will include developing understanding of dinosaur physical defences. Students will brain storm their ideas and we will discuss them as a class. We will then begin to plan how to construct our own dinosaur shields. This will incorporate scientific inquiry but also technology and enterprise skills.  

History: This term we have been learning about the past, present and future. We have been discussing old and new toys the past few weeks. This week lessons will focus on how transport has developed and changed over the years. 

Friday 1st April


 I will be away on Friday 1st April. There will be a relief teacher in Room 6 for the day accompanied by Mrs Cannon. I will return on Monday 4th April.

Easter Break


I'd like to wish all Room 6 families a safe and happy Easter. Just a reminder that school is closed Friday 25th March, Monday 28th March and Tuesday 29th March due to the Easter break. 

Week 8: What We Are Learning This Week



Literacy- We are using the digraphs th and ng this week to practice reading and writing words. During literacy sessions this week students will also participate in writing sessions that incorporate Easter festivities. During guided reading sessions this week we will be focusing on making predictions about texts.

Numeracy- Math lessons this week have a focus on measurement including length, mass & capacity. Students will be engaged in hands on learning to develop their skills in this numeracy strand. Activities will also encourage students to practice their skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's this week.

Term 1 Science







YBPS follows the Primary Connections science program. This terms focus is biological sciences and all Year One students are learning about dinosaurs. 

Week 7: What We Are Learning This Week


Literacy: In literacy sessions this week students are focusing on learning about the digraphs ch and sh. They will be using these digraphs to read and write words and sentences. In guided reading sessions students will continue to practice decoding and developing their reading fluency. We have been learning the story "Cat, Prickle & Pelican" during out writing lessons and we now begin to innovate the story to develop students ideas for their own writing. 

Numeracy: During math lessons this week students are developing their skills to partition numbers. This means to understand different combinations to make numbers (eg. 5+5= 10, 6+4=10, 7+3=10). Students will also be practising their knowledge of days of the week and months of the year. Number writing will also be focused on during math lessons this week.

Old & New Toys



Last week a note was sent home with all Year One students that requested they bring in an old and new toy for our History lessons this week. An old toy may include a toy from your child's past, your childhood or their grandparents. The toys will be kept for the week and sent home on Friday.
