Important Timetable Changes for YBPS

As noted in the school newsletter these timetable changes will take effect on Monday 5th December.

8:35 am Classrooms open
8:50 am Lessons start

11:00 am Play time
11:25 am Early lunch


11:40 am Learning time

1:40 pm Afternoon Break

2:00 pm Learning time
3:00 School ends for the day

During all lessons, students are permitted water, healthy 'crunch and sip' snacks and regular 'brain breaks'.


News

News telling has now finished in our classroom due to the end of the year.

Home Readers and Library Books

Home Readers
Class home readers will be collected next week as they need to be returned to the library before the end of term. Friday this week (2nd December) will be the last day to borrow books from class.

Library Books
All library books are due back and students are no longer able to borrow from the library due to the end of term.

Students need to keep their yellow and blue folders for 2017.

Important Dates for YBPS Families


Here are some important upcoming dates for all YBPS families.
  • Monday 12 December 2016: Reports home
  • Thursday 15 December 2016: Last day of school / Water Fun Day
  • Wednesday 25 January 2017: School office re-opens
  • Wednesday 1 February 2017: Term One commences for students
  • 2017 class lists will be available (online and in the entry to the library) at 2 pm on Monday 30 January 2017.

Friday Clubs

Friday clubs begin next week at YBPS. This week students will be asked to select their preferences for which club they would like to attend. Children will be given their first choice where possible. 

New Block Name



Our block is now called Marlak (mar-lark) which means bush. Our room is now called Marlak 2.

Attendance

This term students are completing assessment to finalise their semester two reports as well we preparing for the transition into Year Two. Many students in Room 6 are missing days of school regularly and missing important lessons and information. Please bring your child to school because every day counts towards their success as learners.

What We Are Learning: Term 4 Week 2


Literacy- This weeks students will be learning how to read and write the digraphs ay (as in play) and ou (as in mouth). During guided reading this week students will be focusing on demonstrating their understanding of reading strategies including predicting and connecting. Writing lessons this week will continue to focus on poetry using the poem "What is the sun?" Students will be encouraged in innovate this poem to begin creating their own poems.

Numeracy- There will be three main math focuses this week will be ordering numbers, place value and writing numbers.  

Science- This week students will complete their investigation about shadows. This will include using science inquiry skills to conduct and evaluate.

Home Readers & Library Books

If you have not already done so please return all library books and home readers. Your child will be unable to borrow from the class or the library if they have any outstanding loans. We will be visiting the library on Tuesday and home reader books will be sent home this week as soon as possible. Thank you for your support!

What We Are Learning: Term 4 Week 1

Literacy: This week students are learning the digraph sounds wh (as in whip) and ph (as in dolphin). They will be using these digraphs to read and write words as well as constructing sentences. During writing sessions this week our focus will be on poetry using the poem "Where is the Sun?" Students will continue to participate in guided reading sessions and handwriting lessons throughout the week. 

Numeracy: This week students will revise identifying fact families using addition and subtraction.   

Science: During science this week students will participate in an investigation about shadows. This process will encourage students to apply their understanding of inquiry skills.  

Geography: Words to describe the weather will be the focus during geography this week. This will include students developing the understanding that weather reports contain details about temperature, wind and rainfall.

Stationary Needed

Many students are missing items such as glue, lead pencils and erasers. Please restock your child's stationary on the holidays. 

Library & Home Readers

Library: Students are not able to borrow from the library this week due to the holidays. Please return any over due library books as soon as possible.

Home Readers: All home reader books are due back to the classroom before the holidays. Students will receive new books to read next term. Please return all yellow folder to class this week for collection.

News: Week 10

Don't forget news is now on Thursdays. Students are required to present to the class about their favourite book. They may want to do this with a poster, collage or drawing. All students projects will be displayed in the classroom. This weeks news tellers are:

Cinderella Ball

Last week all students received an invitation to The Cinderella Ball this Friday 23rd September in Room 6. All students are invited to dress up in fairy tale costumes. I will be placing a food list on the classroom notice board for all parents to select one item for their child to bring on the day. Students are not required to bring lunch on this day, only recess and the item they have selected.

Home Readers

This will be the last week that students can borrow home reader books from the classroom due to the end of term approaching. 

What We Are Learning: Term 3 Week 9

Literacy: This week students are revising the sound ure (as in treasure). They will be using these digraphs to read and write words as well as constructing sentences. During writing sessions this week our class will complete our innovation of the story "The Enormous Turnip." Students will continue to participate in guided reading sessions and handwriting lessons. 

Numeracy: This week students are learning to identify fact families using addition and subtraction. During math lessons students will revise telling the time and writing numbers over 100. They will also practice matching numbers to written words.   

Science: During science this week we will be talking about seasons in collaborative small groups. Each group will create a poster that describes the features of each season. We will create a class flow chart of the seasons in order and compare similarities and differences between seasons. 

Geography: Students will be discussing why maps use symbols instead of realistic depictions of places and objects. As a class we will view a range of maps and discuss the symbols that are present. Students will create symbols for pictures and create their own island.

Term 3 Week 8

Literacy: This week students are revising the trigraph sound air during literacy activities. Writing activities this week will involve students innovating their own stories based on the original text of  " The Enormous Turnip."

Numeracy: Our maths focus for this week is chance and data. Students will be using different strategies to display data and will be asked to discuss data using the language of possible, likely, unlikely and impossible. Students will also demonstrate their skip counting skills and number writing over 100.

Science:  During science this week students will be asked to identify and discuss items as being natural and constructed.They will be participating in an investigation of what happens to a garden over time.

History: 
Students will be using their senses to describe what they would would see, hear, feel and smell in different settings/places.

The sports carnival is no longer this Friday. It has been changed to next Wednesday (31st August). Please see the school newsletter for further details.

Science Homework





This week students will receive some extra homework on Friday. The activity your child will receive relates to our science unit being implemented this term. Please return the homework by next Friday (2nd September). 

Sports Carnival

 

This Friday (26th August) is our school sports carnival. Tomorrow (Tuesday 23rd August) students will participate in jumps and throws. Please ensure you child has a drink bottle, hat and is wearing running shoes for these two days.

Book Week


This week YBPS is celebrating book week. All students will be attending the library for an author visit. The library is also open before and after school for you to browse and purchase a range of books. On Friday students will be participating in DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) and attending a whole school assembly in the morning. All students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character on Friday (no gold coin donation required). Due to book week and the library being used each day students may not be able to change their library books until next week.

Literacy: This term students will be revising the letter sounds that they have been learning this year to develop fluency. They will be using the sounds igh, oa and ar to read/write words and construct sentences. In writing lessons this week students are learning about the structure of a fictional story. We will be learning the story "The Enormous Turnip" and using it to guide our writing.   


Numeracy/Science/Geography/Technology: Please stay tuned for more information in regards to these topics that will also be taught this term. Due to swimming lessons these  subjects will not be taught until swimming lessons are completed.

Swimming Lessons Reminder

Just a reminder that swimming lessons start on Monday. Your child needs to be at school by 8:30am as the bus leaves at 8:45am.

What We Are Learning: Term 3 Week 2

Literacy: This term students will be revising the letter sounds that they have been learning this year to develop fluency. They will be using the sounds ch, th and sh to read/write words and construct sentences. In writing lessons this week students are learning about the structure of poetry. We have been learning the poem "I Have A Dog" and using it to discuss rhyme and sentence structure. Handwriting sessions this week will focus on the  curly caterpillar letters s, f and long ladder letters l and i.  

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is measurement and geometry specifically focusing on shape. Students will be developing their understanding of classifying 2D and 3D shapes (pyramids and prisms). They will be required to use mathematical language such as corners, edges and faces to describe these shapes. During mental maths students will continue to practice their understanding of number and algebra skills including skip counting, number lines, addition/subtraction and place value. 

Science/Geography/Technology: Please stay tuned for more information in regards to these topics that will also be taught this term. Due to swimming lessons next week they subjects will not be taught until swimming lessons are completed. 



  

Sport


Please be aware that sport is now on Fridays. Our timetable has changed as Mr J is no longer teaching sport at YBPS. Room 6 will now have Mrs Browne every Friday afternoon for this session. On Fridays all Year One teachers will also be taking students out for an extra sports session to practice for our school sports carnival.

Swimming Lessons

Last week all students received a note about swimming lessons. If your note has been misplaced please see the office for a replacement. Swimming lessons begin on Monday 1st August and finish on Friday 12th August. Our class is leaving school every day at 8:40am which means students need to be at school by 8:30am each day. The cost per child is $50 for 10 lessons. Please be aware that payment plans are available if needed, just speak to our staff in the office. Please read your swimming notes for further information.

In writing lessons this week students are learning about the structure of a recount. We will be innovating a class recount of our trip to Scitech. Handwriting sessions this week will focus on the  curly caterpillar letters d, g & q.  

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is number and algebra specifically focusing on simple addition and subtraction problems.

Term 2 Week 9: What We Are Learning This Week

Literacy: This week students are will continue to learn about the trigraphs ear and air. They will be using these sounds to read/write words and construct sentences. During guided reading sessions this week we will be revising the learning strategies we have learnt this term. In writing lessons this week students are learning about the structure of a recount. We will be innovating a class recount of our trip to Scitech. Handwriting sessions this week will focus on the  curly caterpillar letters a, c, o & d.  

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is number and algebra specifically focusing on partitioning numbers, place value and skip counting. This week we will also be revising fractions and days of the week. 

Chemical Science: This week we will be looking at how objects change using chocolate and popcorn. Students will discuss how the physical appearance of these objects has changed and how this has occurred. 

History: Students have now brought in their extra homework about old family photographs. We will be discussing these this week and completing an activity relating to families.   



Wednesday 22nd June



Due to 3 Way Conferences this Wednesday (22nd June) I will not be teaching. Room 6 students will have a different teacher for the day so I am able to complete Semester One parent/teacher interviews.

Pirate Dress Up Day FRIDAY!!




PIRATE DAY 
This Friday is Pirate Day. Students and staff are encouraged to come to school dressed as Pirates and bring a gold coin. It is to raise money and awareness for Children's Cancer.

Term 2 Week 7: What We Are Learning This Week

Literacy: This week students are learning about the digraph oi and ur. They will be using these sounds to read/write words and construct sentences. During guided reading sessions this week we will revise some of the reading strategies we have learnt this term. In writing lessons this week students are publishing there invented reports. Handwriting sessions this week will focus on the  curly caterpillar letters a, c, o & d as this was not completed last week.  

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is measurement and geometry focusing on fractions. Students will also demonstrate their understanding of skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. During mental maths we will be revising telling the time and using number lines. 

Chemical Science: There will be no science lesson this week due to the long weekend.

History: There will be no history lesson this week due to a school incursion. 

Year One & Year Two Excursion

All Year One and Two classes are attending an excursion to Scitech on Friday 17th June. A note was sent home with all students last week. Please come and see me if you did not receive a note. All permission slips and money are due to the office by Tuesday 14th June.

Term 2 Week 6: What We Are Learning This Week

Literacy: This week students are will continue to learn about the digraph ow (as in cow and flow). They will be using these sounds to read/write words and construct sentences. During guided reading sessions this week I will expose students to the reading strategy 'Hop, Skip and Jump Kangaroo' to encourage them to read to the end of a book and come back if something doesn't make sense. In writing lessons this week students will continue to learn about the structure of a report. As a whole class we will be inventing reports about dinosaurs. Handwriting sessions this week will focus on the  curly caterpillar letters a, c, o & d.  

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is measurement and geometry focusing on fractions. Students will also demonstrate their understanding of skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. During mental maths we will be revising telling the time and using number lines. 

Chemical Science: This week we will be looking at cooked and uncooked spaghetti and discussing how it has changed. Students will decide which type of spaghetti would be the best to use to construct a "Spaghetti Tower."

History: This term we are discussing the differences and similarities between students daily lives and life during their parents and grandparents childhoods, including family traditions, leisure time and communications. Last week students completed timelines of their lives. This week students will discuss time lines as a class focussing on three time periods of the dinosaurs. We will be making a class timeline on string where students place dinosaurs in the correct period.

Term 2 Week 5: What We Are Learning This Week

Literacy: This week students are will continue to learn about the digraphs ar and or. They will be using these sounds to read/write words and construct sentences. During guided reading sessions this week I will continue to expose students to the reading strategy 'Say the first sound Mouse' to encourage them to hear the initial sound in words as they are reading. In writing lessons this week students will continue to learn about the structure of a report. As a whole class we will be innovating a report about a duck. Students will continue to write they own reports. Handwriting sessions this week will focus on the zig zig monster letters w, z, x & v.  

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is measurement and geometry focusing on money (recognition, foreign currency and value). Students will learn about foreign currency (not all countries have the same money) and practise identifying the value of Australian money. During mental maths we will be revising skip counting (2's, 5's and 10's), telling the time and place value. 

Science: We have now completed our dinosaurs unit based on the biological sciences learning strand. This week students begin a new Primary Connections science unit based on the chemical science learning strand. We will be looking at a "Mystery Object" and discussing how it has changed. This science unit will continue for the rest of the term.

History: This term we are discussing the differences and similarities between students daily lives and life during their parents and grandparents childhoods, including family traditions, leisure time and communications. This week students will discuss time lines as a class focussing on three time periods of the dinosaurs. We will be making a class timeline on string where students place dinosaurs in the correct period.
